Multi-Protocol Wireless and a Crossroads in Industrial IoT Networking
The industrial networking landscape has reached a crossroads as standard protocols begin to eat into traditionally proprietary environments. However, as we’ve seen over the years, there is no such thing as a “one size fits all” networking solution, especially considering the installed base of systems that rely on specialized protocols to communicate. Where does this leave design engineers?
Daniel Cooley, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Silicon Labs’ Internet of Things (IoT) products, spoke with Embedded Computing Design’s Brandon Lewis on this exact topic, explaining how multi-protocol wireless solutions can offer insurance during the transition to standards that provide cost, reuse, and security advantages. Emphasized, however, is the coexistence of hardware and software in this equation, which requires software development teams with deep understanding of hardware down to the transistor level in order to keep these solutions sustainable for the long haul.
