Wind River has added support for Docker and Kubernetes container frameworks to Wind River Linux. The latest operating system release also includes pre-built containers and additional tools based on components from the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) and Yocto Project.
Wind River Linux provides a Yocto Project-compatible cross-architecture container management framework. OverC, the container technology integrated into the latest release of Wind River Linux, is compatible with Docker via Open Container Initiative (OCI) specifications. However, it is lighter weight and smaller footprint than Docker.
OverC was initially developed at Wind River, and supports most processor architectures and orchestration environments. It is available on GitHub.
The enhancements to Wind River Linux are designed to help embedded engineers deploy lightweight containers in long-lifecycle systems, and permit enterprise developers develop cloud native apps that can be run at the edge.
