Sensor Fusion—it sounds like something out of Star Trek, like some super-futuristic technology. In reality, it’s simply combining sensors in one device. While it sounds simple, it’s actually fairly difficult to do, as different sensor types often employ different technology and have different outputs, and obviously different input types.

Artificial intelligence is all the rage. Combine that with the huge amount of video that’s being captured. When you put these two phenomena together, you can (potentially) do some great things.

This week’s Road to Embedded World takes a different twist, in that we are previewing an event that’ll take place on site—but you needn’t be in Nuremberg, Germany to witness it. In fact, it’s designed for engineers who are not on site, and produced at a time that’s easily digestible for people in North America.

Machine vision is the concept of using cameras as an aid in industrial applications, including factory automation. “Aid” can mean different things to different people. For example, if you are responsible for product quality on an assembly line, you can use machine vision to inspect each product as it rolls off the line to ensure that it is being manufacturing to the required specifications and that there are no defects.

The term “secure print” involves protecting printed documents along every step of the document’s life—from the originating application to the target print device and then after it’s in the user’s hands. Secure printing could be a mechanism to keep documents confidential. It could also be a way to ensure that documents are not copied.

AI is regularly in the spotlight because of all the great things that can be accomplish with it. However, while we don’t want to think of it that way, it’s also possible that AI can be used for nefarious reasons, and unfortunately, that’s what’s starting to happen.

The road to embedded world is getting longer and longer in that the number of stops continues to increase, as more embedded vendors sign on to exhibit their wares at the industry’s most significant event of the year.

The CO₂GO is a mobile CO₂ sensor that’s simple to use and sells for about $130. Built around the Infineon Xensiv PAS CO₂ sensor, the system contains green, yellow, and red LEDs that reflect the ambient air quality. Since it’s USB-powered and weighs just a few ounces, the CO2GO can be plugged into a wall charger, computer, and used just about anywhere.

Machine learning (ML) is all about massive amounts of processing, DSP, etc., right? Maybe not, according to the team at Aspinity. The company continues to push ahead on the analog front. The latest member of the company’s analogML family, the AML100, operates completely in the analog domain. As a result, it can reduce always-on system power by 95% (for the record, we had to walk through this a couple of times before I believed them).
