MADRID, SPAIN. KDPOF joined forces with ALPS to develop Gigabit Ethernet over POF optical link concept for telematics control unit modules. The solution connects a central vehicle communications hub (IVI platform) to smart antennas, thereby reducing wireless interference for antenna receivers. In addition to swapping out current RF links for an Ethernet data link, the technology supports LTE-A packets and other sources such as digital radio.

A 1 Gbps Ethernet link was needed to support the growing number of automotive networking applications that require more than 100 Mbps bandwidth.

"Several OEMs choose the IEEE Std 802.3bv™ for Gigabit Ethernet over POF (GEPOF), which is the ideal solution to connect smart antennas to the central communications hub while avoiding electromagnetic interference (EMI)," said KDPOF’s CEO and Co-founder, Carlos Pardo. "The optical link enhances antenna performance, whereas in conventional systems, antenna reception sensitivity is reduced by the radiated emissions coming from the electrical communications links, such as UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair) copper cables, coax, and the shielded alternatives."
