A constant driven exists to further shrink the standard 2″ x 4″ open frame AC/DC power supply, fueled by market demands to create ever more compact products. Naturally, as dimensions decrease, the challenges of thermal management increase. Today’s applications demand passive cooling in that ever-tighter space.

With the new ECF40 series of single output, open frame power supplies, XP Power have reduced that 2″ x 4″ footprint to a mere 1.5″ x 3″. This means a footprint 44 percent smaller than the standard, and 25 percent smaller than the current smallest competitive product. Offering 40 watts at up to 50 °C, the new range includes six models that provide all popular nominal output voltages from 12-48 VDC, and support full power at global 90-264 VAC input ranges and even 80 VAC with minimal derating.

A flat efficiency curve keeps heat generation down and maintains product reliability, which is critical in the healthcare, industrial and technology sectors it will be deployed within. Its high typical efficiency of >90 percent satisfies environmentally conscious consumers and legislation alike.

The real-estate gains of a more compact form factor are quickly lost if enclosures are bogged down with additional external filtering components. XP power address this by compliances with Class B conducted EMC specifications.
