With a dedicated section showcasing innovation specifically relating to how most of us personally interface with an embedded system – a display – Embedded World 2016 promises to usher in a new era. Small self-emitting OLED displays requiring no backlight yet achieving high brightness and contrast ratios are increasingly finding themselves deployed into embedded solutions that previously could only justify basic character displays.
Sunlight readability as ever lies high on the agenda, where a self-emitting solution removes the power and heat dissipation considerations many don’t consider if attempting to crowbar a “high brightness” display into an existing product.
Elsewhere, could this be the year the embedded industry accelerates the currently sluggish migration to e-ink derives displays, long favored in our trusty Kindle? With their incomprehensively low power consumption, owing to power only being drawn when the content is updated, e-ink displays could almost have been designed for our industry. The rapid emergence of wearables may further accelerate their global deployment.
