Cary, NC (November 30, 2020) – Epic Games today released the first edition of its Automotive Field Guide, a comprehensive roadmap for automotive industry professionals wishing to leverage real-time technology at any point in the pipeline from design to dealership. Epic’s Unreal Engine is used by hundreds of automotive manufacturers, OEMs, and retailers around the world, giving Epic a birds-eye view of the many ways in which real-time technology is transforming the industry. Authored by longtime automotive reporter Tim Seppala in collaboration with Epic, the Automotive Field Guide covers key stages across the pipeline – from creating and visualizing the initial design, to testing and training during engineering, to efficiency and safety in manufacturing, to photorealistic product configurators in the showroom. With real-world case studies from industry leaders such as BMW, Daimler Protics, Toyota, MHP / Pagani, Mackevision, CarSim, CARLA, and many more, the Automotive Field Guide shows how Unreal Engine can be implemented across the board.
“Real-time technology is driving transformative changes across the automotive world, and we’re seeing how Unreal Engine is the key for many teams to providing greater efficiency, innovation, collaboration, and cost savings,” said Heiko Wenczel, Head of the Detroit Lab, Epic Games. “The Automotive Field Guide is a valuable resource for anyone in the industry wondering how they can take advantage of this technology, and what tangible benefits it can provide.”
In addition to the Automotive Field Guide, Epic recently unveiled its HMI (human-machine interface) initiative to enable the creation of automotive infotainment and digital cockpit experiences, with the upcoming GMC HUMMER EV to be the first vehicle using Unreal Engine in the digital cockpit. As part of its HMI initiative, Epic also announced partnerships with industry leaders BlackBerry QNX, Mapbox, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., Siili Auto, and Vectorform.
Stay tuned for more details on Unreal Engine 4.26, coming later this year, with exciting new features for the automotive community including enhanced high-quality media output with support for exporting render passes, new volumetric clouds for exterior shots, and an extended Collaborative Viewer template with voice-to-voice communication over VOIP.
